Tom Hanks explains why he doesn't want to play villains: I can't fake it

Tom Hanks has a long career under his belt and has always stood out for his beloved roles, such as in 'Forrest Gump', his character in 'Philadelphia', in 'The Castaway' and giving his voice to Woody in 'Toy Story'... It's true that the actor has always been attracted to that kind of role, something that has pigeonholed him as a good guy.

But not everything is a coincidence, and he himself acknowledged in 2019 to the New York Times that he does not like playing villainous roles and that he is looking to move away from them. Tom Hanks is convinced that he would not be good at playing the bad guy.

"I realized a long time ago that I couldn't make anyone afraid," Hanks told the New York Times.

"That's not to say that my character is necessarily sympathetic. I think I could play a mysterious role, but it won't be that bad."

Tom Hanks has played antagonists, but has turned down the occasional villain role

Despite being one of the best actors in Hollywood, he believes he wouldn't be able to play a convincing villain.

"I can never understand them, because antagonists, in general, require a certain degree of malevolence that I can't fake," he revealed.

But despite disliking such roles, he has played characters with attitudes that have angered viewers. In the 'Elvis' film, for example, he plays the king of rock's manager, Colonel Parker, and manages to ruin the artist's career with despicable tactics. He also plays a killer in 'Road to Perdition'.

Although throughout his career he has turned down villain roles, such as Tim Burton's 2017 film 'Dumbo', which Hanks declined, Michael Keaton was cast instead
