Growing Up ‘Harry Potter’: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint
  • Three New Stars Are Born

The three stars of the Harry Potter franchise, Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint attend a photocall presenting them as the new cast of the first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, in London, August 23, 2000.

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’

Radcliff, Grint and Watson got into character as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermoine Granger on the set of the first movie in November 2001. "When I read the books, I always said, 'If they made the movie, I could play Ron,' Grint has said of relating to his role.

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’

Radcliff was 11 (the same age as his character) when he started filming in 2000, Watson was just 10, while Grint (right) was the eldest of the group at 12 years old. Here, the trio posed together while doing press for the first film at the Gulidhall in London October 25, 2002.

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’

"I was a kid, among other kids," Radcliff has said of being on set (here with his co-stars during the shooting of the second film in 2002). "To be 'special' just because I had been picked for this part was just…bizarre."

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ New York Premiere

"People literally have watched me grow up onscreen," Watson (with her cast mates at the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at Radio City Music Hall May 23, 2004) has said of the franchise's decade-long filming process.

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’

The third film in the series, directed by Alfonso Cuaron, opened June 4, 2004 and grossed $250 million at the box office. The cast saw new additions with Michael Gambon coming on to replace Richard Harris, who played Albus Dumbledore until his death; Emma Thompson also  joined the cast as Professor Sybill Trelawney.

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’

The threesome attend a photocall for the fourth film Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (which went on to gross $290 million at the box office) at Merchant Taylors' Hall on October 25, 2005 in London.

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ (2005)

"It feels like the past ten years have gone by in a blur," Grint (on the set of the fourth film with Watson and Radcliff) has said of his Harry Potter experience.

  • London (2006)

"I have spent more of my life being someone else than I have being myself," Watson (posing with Grint and Radcliffe after accepting the Empire Outstanding Contribution award at the Sony Ericsson Empire Film Awards in London on March 13, 2006) has said of figuring out her life post-Hermoine.

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ (2007)

The fifth film was the first to be directed by David Yates (he also went on to direct the franchise's final three films), and featured new face Evanna Lynch (L) as Luna Lovegood. On June 25, 2007 Lynch posed with Grint, Watson, Radcliffe and Katie Leung (who plays Harry's love interest Cho Chang) promoted Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in central London.

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’

"At 5 foot 5, I am not a natural action-movie star," Radcliffe, with many of his classmates on the set of Order of the Phoenix in 2007, has said of having a short stature. Interestingly, while the fifth book is the longest of author J.K. Rawling's series, the fifth film is the shortest of the bunch, running at 138 minutes.

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’

Radcliffe (with his cast mates during a photocall for the sixth film at the Claridges Hotel in London July 6, 2009) recently admitted he developed a drinking problem during the shooting of the film. "There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person's lifestyle that really isn't suited to me," said the actor, who now doesn't drink.

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’

The fifth film, which opened on July 15, 2009, is the second-highest grossing film of the series, making $302 million at the box office (the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, pulled in the most at $317.6 million).

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I’

"Every opportunity I will get to the day I die will be traceable to the fact I was cast as Harry Potter in 2000," says Radcliffe (with Grint and Watson at the premiere of the finale's first part, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1, at The Odeon Leicester Square in London November 11, 2010). "These movies have given me enough memories to last 10,000 years."

  • ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1’

The final Potter pic, which opens July 15, will offer the Academy its last chance to recognize a franchise that has taken in almost $6.4 billion in worldwide box office.
